Why Are Mammograms So Important for Women?
Mammograms are an essential part of preventative care for women . These imaging tests are usually completed in 30 minutes or less but can be life-saving. If you’re one of the many women who is postponing your mammogram after receiving a physician referral for one, here are some of the reasons you should consider setting up your appointment.
Diagnose Breast Cancer In Early Stages
Mammograms allow your doctor to see changes in your breast tissue before other symptoms develop. That means that you could be diagnosed with breast cancer and start receiving treatment when the cancer is in very early stages, before it has spread out of the breast. With early diagnosis, treatment is often less invasive and more effective. Keep in mind that while monthly self-exams are also important, a mammogram can show a change in your breast that you can’t detect through a manual exam until it grows larger.
Prevent Breast Cancer
In some cases, a mammogram may not only diagnose existing breast cancer but could actually prevent it. During a screening, your doctor may detect a pre-cancerous growth that would eventually become cancer. By removing the pre-cancerous area, your doctor will prevent you from developing breast cancer and being forced to undergo more difficult treatments.
Set a Baseline
If you’ve never had a mammogram before, the importance of your first one isn’t just the screening itself but also the baseline image of your breast tissue it creates. If there is a change in your breast tissue in the future, it can be easily identified by comparing the new image to your baseline mammogram.
