Finding Support After a Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Many women find themselves feeling alone upon receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. Yet, as this video explains, the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery program gives newly diagnosed breast cancer patients a support system through breast cancer survivors.

The Reach to Recovery program pairs up a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient with someone who has survived the disease and is at least one year out from treatment. The partners can then communicate in person or over the phone to discuss the concerns that breast cancer patients have while in treatment. Moreover, the program pairs up each patient with someone who has gone through the same type of treatment to allow for a greater understanding between the women. Also, to ensure that each breast cancer patient receives informed advice from her partner, the American Cancer Society puts each survivor volunteer through a thorough training program.
