An Introduction to Breast Cancer Treatment
If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, your healthcare team will design a treatment plan that caters to your specific situation and preferences. As this video explains, a breast cancer treatment plan takes into consideration several factors and can be administered in a variety of ways.
After making a breast cancer diagnosis , your doctor will evaluate a number of aspects relating to your case. The first is the stage of cancer and if it is contained to the breast. Second, your doctor will determine the type of cancer and the prominence of estrogen, progesterone, or HER2/neu receptors in the cancer cells. Next, he or she will look at your age, general health, and status of your menstrual or menopausal cycle. Lastly, your doctor will consider whether this is your first cancer treatment. Based on these factors, you will be prescribed treatment that involves one or several of the following options: surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies.
